Join us for "The Watermelon Woman", Cheryl Dunye’s groundbreaking 1996 landmark of New Queer Cinema.
Cheryl, a young Black lesbian filmmaker working in a video store, becomes fascinated by a forgotten Black actress from the 1930s, credited only as “The Watermelon Woman.” As her search unfolds, the film blends fiction, documentary and sharp humor into a playful, intimate reflection on Black queer history, desire and the gaps left in the archive.
Widely celebrated as the first feature film directed by an openly Black lesbian filmmaker, The Watermelon Woman remains a bold, funny and deeply original classic.
The film will be shown in original language with English subtitles.
